This Teppanyaki chef is a local legend
Marty from Ginza Teppanyaki has been cooking up a storm in Auckland since he arrived in 2011.
He was a refugee from Christchurch, where he owned two restaurants before the earthquake.
He moved to Auckland and found that it was "like stepping into another dimension, where there is no pressure to conform to any single cultural standard, but to find your own identity in a myriad of a cultural jigsaw puzzle".
Marty started working as a teppanyaki chef at some major hotels in Auckland and eventually started his own successful business catering for weddings, business events and private parties.
He is inspired by "the foods, fragrant smell, the hustle and bustle of the markets and stalls of Hanoi, Saigon, Bangkok, Phnom Penh where chefs are cooking in tiny spaces directly in front of hungry guests or customers.
